HVAC Terminology

AFUE

Annual Fuel Utilization Effiecency. Measures a gas furnaces efficiency. The higher the AFUE rating, the more efficient the unit.

BTU

British Thermal Unit. The quantity of heat required to raise one pound of water one degree Fahrenheit at a specific temperature (as 39 deg F).

Capacity

Refers to a unit's ability to cool or heat. Usually measured in BTUs or tons.

Condenser

In an air-conditioning system, it dissipates heat from the refrigerant, changing refrigerant from vapor to liquid.

Ducts

The pipes or channels that carry air throughout the house.

HSPF

Heating Seasonal Perormance Factor measures the heating efficiency of a heat pump.

HVAC

Heating, Ventilation and Air-conditioning

MERV

Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. Measures efficiency or air filters.

Refrigerant

A chemical compound used in air- conditioning to transport heat. R-22 and R-410A are commonly used in residential systems.

SEER

The SEER rating of a unit is the cooling output during a typical cooling-season divided by the total electric energy input during the same period. The higher the unit's SEER rating the more energy efficient it is.

Thermostat

The low voltage control center of a heating and air-conditioning system.

Ton

Unit of measurement used to determine cooling capacity. One ton of cooling can remove 12,000 BTUs of heat per hour.

UV

Ultraviolet. Ultraviolet light is a high-frequency light above the visible spectrum used in air-conditioning systems as an air purifier.

Zoning

Method of dividing a home into different aress or zones that can be independently controlled.
